Chemical Exposure

Virtually any chemical exposure, even in low doses, can have a negative affect on health if the exposure is for a prolonged period of time. Prolonged exposure to chemicals can result in multiple chemical sensitivity, which is also known as:

  • toxic injury;
  • chemical sensitivity (CS);
  • chemical injury syndrome (CIS);
  • 20th Century syndrome;
  • environmental illness (EI):
  • sick-building syndrome;
  • idiopathic environmental intolerance (IEI); and
  • toxicant-induced loss of tolerance (TILT).

Symptoms of MCS may be mild, moderate or severe, and commonly include the following during or after chemical exposure:

  • anaphylactic shock;
  • difficulty breathing;
  • headaches; and
  • contact dermatitis.
