Neuropathy

As many as 20,000,000 people suffer from peripheral neuropathy, a diagnosis for a nerve disorder or condition that affects the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system is comprised of nerves that branch off of the spinal cord and extend throughout the body.

Neuropathy can be caused by damage to any of a nerve thee parts, which are the cell body, axons and dendrites. Most injury is to the axons, which is responsible for communicating signs from nerve cell to nerve cell. Nerves can be damaged in car accidents, tractor trailer accidents, SUV accidents, motorcycle accidents, bus accidents, and as the result of falls, falling objects, construction side accidents, defective products, and medical malpractice.

Generally, peripheral neuropathy is categorized based on the affected nerves (e.g, motor, sensory or autonomic), the location affected in the body (e.g., mononeuropathy, polyneuropathy, or symmetric neuropathy), or the cause (e.g., diabetic neuropathy, nutritional neuropathy, idiopathic neuropathy).
