Protecting Aging Parents From Medical Malpractice

The elderly in our country are the biggest consumers of medical care. As we age, we need medical professionals more and more. Because senior citizens are more likely to visit a doctor than other people, they are also more likely to become the victims of medical malpractice. Fortunately, there are ways that you can help protect your aging parents from medical negligence and error.

1. Medication

Make sure that every medical provider your parent comes into contact with knows every medication that is being taken. This includes vitamins and supplements. This will help to prevent medication error.

When the doctor hands your parent a prescription, make sure that you can read it. If you can’t, the pharmacist may have a difficult time as well. When you pick up the medication at the pharmacy, be sure you understand how and when your parent is supposed to take the medicine before you walk out the door.

2. Hospital

If your parent goes to the hospital, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Make sure you see medical professionals wash or sanitize their hands or put on fresh latex gloves. Never be embarrassed to speak up if you think the need is there. You are advocating for your parent.

3. Surgery

If your parent needs to have surgery, don’t be afraid to get a second opinion. If the procedure is indeed necessary, know why and what you can expect. Ask about the type of home care that will be required and how long it will reasonably take your parent to recover.

Never feel as though you can’t ask questions or get a second opinion when it comes to your parents and their healthcare. Acting as your parents’ advocate is one way that you can help ensure that they do not become victims to medical negligence or error.
