Questions to Ask Your Child’s Pediatrician

If you are a new parent, you may not yet understand the close relationship that you will develop with your child’s pediatrician. This medical professional will be your source of information when your child is sick, and they will help you understand all of the milestones you should be watching for. Selecting the right pediatrician is important and should not be taken lightly.

Think of choosing a pediatrician like shopping for anything else. You want to make sure the doctor is the right fit and will meet your expectations. Here are five questions to ask a pediatrician to help decide if they are the right one for you and your child.

1. What hospital are you affiliated with?

Where will your child go if they fall ill or become injured? They will be transferred to a hospital, but which one? You will want to make sure that the hospital the pediatrician is affiliated with accepts your insurance.

2. Are you in good standing with the medical board?

It may seem like a personal question, but it is your right to know if the pediatrician is in good standing. You will want to know if they have had medical malpractice claims filed against them and the outcome of those claims.

3. What happens after hours?

Your child will not get sick strictly during business hours. How will your phone calls be handled after hours? Know where your doctor will be sending you or how they expect you to handle emergencies.

4. How long have you been in practice?

You may be comfortable with a doctor with decades’ of experience under his belt. You may be more interested in a new grad with modern medical training. Knowing how long the pediatrician has practiced will help you make your decision.

Don’t think that you cannot question a doctor. It is your right to ask any questions that will help you determine if the pediatrician is right for you and your family. Asking the right questions can help to ensure that you are able to establish a trusting and lasting relationship with your child’s doctor.
